DURHAM WEATHER FORECAST
Durham Weather Forecast for Today and Next 7 Days

First really cold day of the season

Today was the first really seasonal day of the autumn. The wind was a cold north easter, with frequent blustery showers blowing in from the North Sea. Temperatures struggled to get to 7 degrees C on Tuesday 20th, then on Wed 21st we also had frequent hail showers. Precipitation totals were expected to reach nearly 25mm (1”) over the two days. Winds then fell light to allow the first Air Frost of the season as temperatures fell below zero around midnight. No widespread snow though, even though Madden and Co. had been predicting Snowmageddon in the popular press and will no doubt claim success. There has been some snow reported over the high ground of the Pennines, Scotland and Wales, with a few reports of snow (hail?) around the Brighton area. The average temperature for November is still well above the long term mean, and wind is likely to come from a more South Easterly point in the coming days.

Liam Dutton Explains How To Spot Fake Weather Stories

Liam Dutton explains why most weather stories carried by the tabloid press and issued by organisations like Exacta Weather and the like should be ignored as complete hokum. Most weather forecasters just ignore such stuff, but irresponsible and sensationalist forecasts ‘gets Liam’s goat’, as it does mine, so here’s his video.

Cheers, Liam

A very average October this one, mean temperature was +0.1 degC compared to the average in Durham (9.8 degC) and rainfall was spot on average (60.9 mm) for the month. The bulk of the rainfall came in two spells, around the 12th-13th and 27th-30th.

There were several ground frosts late in the month as the air flow came from the northerly arctic source. Sleet was observed to fall on the morning of 27th.
